Review of L'ORÉAL Paris COLORISTA Washout #Turquoisehair
Do you ever feel like you need to change something about yourself? Maybe get a new haircut, hairstyle, outfit or perhaps dye your hair?
This is me all the time!
Having naturally dark brown frizz-prone and dry curly hair means that I am quite limited in my options.
I don't want to bleach (my hair is already moisture-deprived), I also don't want to straighten (heat damage, split ends and straw hair - no thanks) and lastly, I don't want to go hairdressers as I am paranoid they will butcher my hair (I have never and will never step foot inside a hairdressers)!
In my lifetime, the only people who have dealt with my hair are my parents, grandmas and my close friends. They have only done basic things to my hair such as brush/comb, plait, braid and cane row (cornrow if you're American). I have also straightened my hair and dyed it myself a few times in the past but I can honestly say that I have never gone to a hairdressers.
Given all these restrictions I feel like I am left with the same hair everyday... BORING! However, when I saw the L'oréal Paris Colorista Washout advertised on TV, I thought yes, finally, a new playful and colourful but temporary hair dye has been created!
I didn't rush out to the shops as soon as I saw the advert (adverts don't usually impress me to the point of monkey see monkey do). But on my next trip to BOOTS I decided to have a look at their hair dye aisle and I spotted some colorista washouts!
I first picked up some bright colours like purple and indigo only to discover that these and the majority of the colours only work for blonde, ombré or highlighted hair (BOOOOO).
Anyways I found that there are 4 colours that will be 'visible on all hair types'. These are: Orange, Red, Burgundy and Turquoise. I wasn't feeling the orange or red or burgundy so I was left with only one colour, turquoise... Strange choice of hair colour, I know, but, turquoise is a mixture of green and blue and considering that blue is my favourite colour (regardless of whether or not it suits me or not, blue is the best), means that it was not a strange choice at all. In addition, the turquoise shade is very dark so it will not draw too much unwanted attention unlike a neon turquoise.
Here is what the box looks like...

As you can see, this turquoise colour is supposed to be 'visible on all hair types'; I'm guessing this means the colour will show on curly, wavy, straight, thick, fine, greasy, dry, coarse and mixed hair.
You can barely see the turquoise colour on the model's hair from this photo, but it is actually turquoise although it looks like a mix of black and turquoise!
Back of the box |
Here, Colorista shows you how the turquoise will come out if you do highlights or the ombré look. It also informs blondes that the colour will last for longer and will be more stronger.
Colorista also states, the colour will show up immediately on brunette hair.
My hair is dark brown; so there could be a chance that the colour will not show on my hair.
I did consider this before I purchased it; obviously the lighter your hair, the more intense the colour will be but, nonetheless, I decided to give it a go!
Contents of box |
- 1 tube of turquoise colour 80ml
- 2 pairs of gloves
- instructions leaflet
**Before applying Colorista turquoise washout colour you must perform an skin allergy patch test.
To do a patch test, coat the colour on a clean cotton bud, next apply the colour behind your ear about the size of small coin (5pence), allow to dry and leave on for 48 hours. Avoid getting the patch wet and try not to rub it off in the shower.
**If within these 48 hours you experience any allergic symptoms e.g. irritation, soreness, redness, swelling, rinse off the dye and DO NOT APPLY THE COLORISTA WASHOUT COLOUR TO YOUR HAIR.
I did the patch test and I did not have an allergic reaction to the colour so after 48 hours had passed I applied the colour to my hair.
But first, this is what my hair looks like in natural daylight

Before I coloured my hair, I brushed my hair using my tangle teezer, if you haven't already read my review about this miracle brush then I urge you to do so now!
After detangling all my knots, I put on the gloves that are provided with the Colorista kit, took a small section of hair and applied the colour from the top to bottom. I applied the colour evenly so that it would coat all my hair. I used up all of the remaining colour on parts that I felt needed more, then I massaged the colour into my hair and left it on for 25mins. I think I should have left it on for 30mins which is the maximum time stated by Colorista.
Anyways when the timer rang I put on the second pair of gloves and proceeded to rinse it out.
The colour dyed the bath tub blue so it took me a while to realise that the water was actually running clear from my hair! lol!
I chose to go for the full coverage, so I coloured all my hair with the turquoise colour.
And now for the turquoise hair...
This is my #turquoisehair
This image was taken the next day; I coloured my hair in the evening and it air-dried it so I was unable to take a photo of the results on the same day. However this photo was taken within 24 hours of colouring it.
I was impressed with it, although I felt it was not as vivid as I hoped it would be. I found that in good lighting it was visible but at night time or under shadows it was unnoticeable.
It looks more green than blue, but I still liked the shade it came out. It left my hair feeling really conditioned and soft and shiny which made me very happy. I was expecting my hair to be dry and dull.
These photos were taken on the evening I coloured it so the lighting is artificial. Like I said above, you can barely see the colour at night, I took these photo using my phone camera with flash. The turquoise colour is there but it is difficult to see unless you look closely...
POSITIVES:
- I DO LIKE THE COLOUR
- BUILT IN CONDITIONER - NO NEED TO APPLY A CONDITIONER AFTER RINSING OUT THE COLOUR
- LEAVES HAIR SOFT AND SHINY - THANKS TO THE BUILT-IN CONDITIONER
- NO HARSH CHEMICALS - NO AMMONIA, NO PEROXIDE ETC. GOOD FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO GO EASY ON THEIR HAIR.
- TEMPORARY - IF YOU TEND TO GET BORED OF COLOURS QUICKLY OR YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE COLOUR TO SUIT YOUR MOOD THEN THIS IS A GREAT OPTION AS IT IS NOT PERMANENT.
- WASHES OUT - EVENTUALLY... WITH EACH SHAMPOO AND RINSE THE COLOUR FADES AWAY.
NEGATIVES:
- NOT ENOUGH DYE FOR MY HAIR - I HAVE A LOT OF HAIR; I THINK IT WOULD'VE BEEN ENOUGH TO GO OMBRÉ (JUST THE ENDS)
- LOOKED GREEN RATHER THAN TURQUOISE
- BARELY SHOWS IN NATURAL LIGHT - ONLY NOTICEABLE IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY...
- SLIGHTLY PRICEY - CONSIDERING THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH TO COAT ALL MY HAIR & THE FACT THAT IT WAS NOT VERY VISIBLE
- SOME THOUGHT MY HAIR LOOKED BLACK! - SO EVEN DARKER THAN MY ORIGINAL HAIR COLOUR... YIKES!
- STAINED THE BATHTUB AFTER I APPLIED IT AND RINSED IT OUT - SPENT A COUPLE MINS SCRUBBING THE BATHTUB WITH A SPONGE + CIF UNTIL I GOT THE BATHTUB WHITE AGAIN!
- SLIGHTLY DIFFICULT TO APPLY - IT'S TO BE USED ON DRY SHAMPOOED HAIR, MY HAIR WAS A POOFY BALL SO COATING ALL MY STRANDS PROVED DIFFICULT BECAUSE MY HAIR KEPT FLYING AROUND!
- LOADS OF BLUE DYE COMES OUT EACH TIME YOU WASHOUT WITH SHAMPOO - BUT IT DOESN'T STAIN THE TUB COMPARED TO THE FIRST APPLICATION!
Overall, I would recommend this, especially if you are thinking about dying your hair and this is the first time.
I would not recommend this if your hair is black, there is no way in hell that the turquoise will show! Even my dark brown hair was pushing it, but my curiosity got the better of me so I had to try it!
If you don't like it at least it will wash out, so you won't be stuck with it forever! It will come out quicker if you wash your hair more frequently. As my hair is high maintenance, I don't wash it everyday, I tend to wash my hair twice a week, if that.
Another reason why mine takes long to washout is because my hair is curly therefore, I use less shampoo and more conditioner.

You can buy L'ORÉAL Paris COLORISTA Washout #Turquoisehair directly from L'Oreal Paris online or you can find it in Boots, or Superdrug.
Each colour costs £6.99, I bought mine on offer in Boots for for £5.99.

If I am bothered I might try the burgundy colour, because that looks alright. If I only buy 1 then I will go for the ombré look or the highlights. If it is on special offer then maybe I will buy 2 as then I'll have more colour to work with so I can coat all my hair; I would rather have all my hair coloured rather than just a few strands.
Of course if I do this then I will definitely make a post and let you know how it turns out!
Let me know if you have tried any #turquoisehair or any other funky colours or brands and what you thought about them.
