On a mission to find the best Brand of Coconut water in London

Coconut water freshly drunk from it's original source has got to be the best tasting natural drink of all time!

Forget about fresh orange, apple, pineapple and watermelon juice, coconut water is the drink to be having on a hot British summer's day!

Not only is coconut water a refreshing drink, but it has numerous health benefits. Being low in calories means that it will help you to lose weight, so they are great for anyone watching their figure.

Coconut water is also perfect for rehydrating your body and contains magnesium which may alleviate headaches.

Drinking it regularly can also prevent wrinkles and cancer, as well as lower blood pressure, aid digestion and remove toxins from the body because it consists of essential minerals, vitamins and electrolytes.

I love Green Coconuts aka Jelly Nuts, the water is sweet with subtle hints of coconut.
It is slightly cloudy in colour but more or less clear and has a thin consistency.

Usually after drinking every last drop of this heavenly water you cut it open and if you are lucky (depending on the age of the coconut), there should be a decent amount of coconut jelly meat (from 7 - 9 months) that you can spoon out directly from inside the coconut and enjoy.

It is white like snow and has the texture of jelly at 8 months or a slightly rubbery texture at 9 months. Both textures taste sweet and juicy; they are not dry like the meat from a fully mature coconut which is brown, so you will have no difficulty in chewing/swallowing it.

Coconuts require tropical climates to grow, you can find coconut palm trees in Asia, South America including the Caribbean, Australia and some parts of the Middle East and Africa.

For a long time now I have been trying to find a brand of coconut water that tastes just like the coconut water from immature fresh green jelly coconuts. I know this is wishful thinking; it's impossible to store fresh coconut water without it perishing, so what I am looking for is a brand with the closest taste to a freshly cut coconut's water.

So far I have tried a couple of brands which I will rate and discuss below.

FOCO

 PRICE: £3

CLOSENESS TO FRESH COCONUT WATER: 4/10

OVERALL RATING: 3/10

NEGATIVES:
  • MUST BE CONSUMED WITHIN 24 HOURS OF OPENING - THERE ARE NO PRESERVATIVES. THIS PROVED QUITE DIFFICULT. IMAGINE ONLY ONE PERSON DRINKING 1 LITRE OF GROSS COCONUT WATER IN ONE DAY!
  • PRICE IS STEEP FOR POOR QUALITY - CONSIDERING THE BAD TASTE IT SHOULD BE CHEAPER.
  • STRANGE AFTERTASTE - THE FIRST SIP IS VERY VERY DECEIVING, IT TASTES LIKE COCONUT FOR A SPLIT SECOND THEN THERE IS A TERRIBLE ARTIFICIAL/CHEMICAL TASTE WHICH LINGERS IN YOUR MOUTH AFTER DRINKING! YUK!
  • TASTES BETTER FROM CHILLED
  • ONCE OPENED MUST BE REFRIGERATED - NOT A NEGATIVE BUT JUST A REMINDER!

POSITIVES:
Side
Side
  • DID NOT MAKE ME SICK! - HOORAY!
  • ATTRACTIVE CARTON DESIGN - WELL, IF IT DIDN'T LOOK NICE THEN I WOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT IT!
  • SMOOTH & THIN CONSISTENCY - SIMILAR TO THAT OF A FRESH COCONUT.
  • 100% NATURAL COCONUT WATER - SO IT SAYS ON THE CARTON AND IS FROM YOUNG GREEN COCONUTS.
  • PROVIDES FAST HYDRATION.
  • NO ADDED SUGAR
  • VEGAN & KOSHER

**I would not recommend this brand of coconut water.

If you want to try it you can buy it from most supermarkets like ASDA, TESCO or Sainsbury's.

I bought mine when it was on offer, I would not buy it at full price.

Apparently the taste and colour may vary because it is natural so maybe I had a carton from a rubbish batch.

FOCO coconut water is produced in Vietnam.

If you do try it let me know what yours tasted like in the comment section below this post.

**This brand also produces smaller 330ml or 500ml cartons in a selection of coconut water + fruit combos: mango, lychee, pineapple, pink guava and pomegranate.

The next brand is...

ASDA

PRICE: £2

CLOSENESS TO FRESH COCONUT WATER: 5/10

OVERALL RATING: 5/10

NEGATIVES:

  • NOT VERY SWEET - IT HAS THE COCONUT FLAVOUR BUT IS NOT SWEET ENOUGH. IT TASTES WATERY. SO CLOSE BUT YET SO FAR!

POSITIVES:

  • REASONABLE PRICE GIVEN THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT
  • LONGER REFRIGERATION LIFE - UNLIKE FOCO THIS COCONUT WATER CAN BE CONSUMED WITHIN 4 DAYS ONCE OPENED AND KEPT REFRIGERATED. SO DOES NOT NEED TO BE GUZZLED DOWN IN ONE DAY!
  • ATTRACTIVE CARTON DESIGN - THE COCONUT WITH A STRAW SEEMS PRETTY LEGIT AS DOES THE BEACH BACKGROUND WITH THE TROPICAL PLANTS.
  • SMOOTH & THIN CONSISTENCY
  • REFRESHING -  NICE SUBSTITUTE FOR WATER.
  • NO ARTIFICIAL COLOURS OR FLAVOURS
  • VEGETARIAN

I think ASDA did well, their coconut water which is produced in Spain tastes much better than FOCO coconut water. Although it is not very sweet you do not get a chemical after taste and I can taste an essence of coconut which is good.
I recommend ASDA's Coconut water. Try it and leave me a comment below with your opinion.

**If you suffer from tree nut allergies then please consult with your doctor first before consuming any coconut water or coconut product.
